Start with one question

Before choosing a target, decide what the night can support. Moonlight, haze, wind, and the available hours all narrow the field. A shorter list is useful: it turns setup time into imaging time.

The same principle applies to processing. Decide what the image is about before opening every tool. Restraint often protects the faint structure that made the target interesting in the first place.
